What is a recovery centre? Inside Australia's wellness studio trend

Recovery lounges bundle sauna, cold plunge, compression and more under one roof. Here is what they are and what a visit looks like.

A recovery centre — sometimes called a recovery lounge — is a venue that brings several recovery services together in one space. Instead of a single modality, you might find a sauna, a cold plunge, compression, and red light all on one booking. They have grown quickly across Australian cities.

What you tend to find

  • Heat: an infrared or traditional sauna.
  • Cold: an ice bath or cold plunge.
  • Compression: recovery boots for the legs.
  • Sometimes red light, float, or wellness HBOT as well.

What a visit looks like

Many centres sell a session that lets you move between stations over an hour or so, or a membership for regular visits. Because everything is in one place, people often build a short routine — warm, cold, compress — rather than booking each service separately.

Is it worth it over single venues?

If you like variety or want to try several things, a centre is convenient. If you only want one modality, a specialist venue may be cheaper. It comes down to how you like to spend a session.

You can explore each service on RecoveryMap — start with infrared sauna for the heat side.

See the cold side on the cold plunge page.

Recovery boots are covered on the compression therapy page.
